Article: On the way to NIS-2 conformity with IEC 62443-4-2

IEC 62443-4-2: Cybersecurity for industrial computers

Cybersecurity is essential for companies to master the digital transformation in a sustainable way. A comprehensive industrial security standard provides clarity when selecting secure computing solutions. Digital transformation is essential for companies to remain competitive. Without effective measures to strengthen cybersecurity, the opportunities of the digital transformation can turn into risks. Companies today are much more susceptible to cyber attacks, data leaks and the resulting business interruptions with devastating financial consequences. One of the main targets of cyberattacks is the industrial sector.

    Cybersecurity through regulation

As a result, the legal requirements in the area of cybersecurity have been significantly tightened for the EU member states. NIS2 prescribes the security and reporting obligations for critical infrastructure, while the forthcoming Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) sets out binding standards for the cyber security of products with digital components as well as specific requirements for their development, design and maintenance.

The first step: risk assessment of the supply chain

The first step for industrial companies is a comprehensive risk assessment of the supply chain. The main focus here is on selecting trustworthy suppliers who deliver safe products. The ISA/IEC 62443-4-2 standard ensures the implementation of the corresponding safety functions of the automation and control systems (IACS) used at device level and forms the basis for compliance with the new regulations. The use of safety-certified products therefore provides a solid basis for a safe and rapid market launch.

    Security at device level

A high level of security at device level requires the use of trustworthy hardware with a unique device identity and state-of-the-art encryption and authentication measures. This is the only way to ensure that only authorised users have access. Systems must have a multi-layered security architecture with hardware-based trust (e.g. through TPM 2.0), tamper protection and secure boot processes. Life cycle management and secure remote management of the devices are also crucial for this. Companies need complete transparency and control over their devices in the field. To ensure system integrity, these must be permanently updated with over-the-air security patches and updates. Effective device ID management and secure VPN-based remote access are essential to protect industrial PCs and other edge devices as well as industrial plants and secure critical infrastructures.

    Eurotech’s contribution to cybersecurity
Eurotech understands the importance of cybersecurity in the digital transformation not just as a technical requirement, but as a strategic necessity for companies in the digital age. The company is embedding cybersecurity at the core of its edge computing systems and global IIoT projects, ensuring that they can withstand future threats. Eurotech’s solution protects customers from growing cyber threats by offering IEC 62443-4-2 certified IIoT gateways and edge computers. Through its subsidiary InoNet Computer, Eurotech configures and manufactures industrial computers in Germany to meet the challenges of the future.

    To secure industrial PCs

IEC 62443: Industrial PCs with IEC 62443-4-2 certification

In the connected industry, strong OT security measures are essential to protect against devastating cyber-attacks. As well as financial damage, there is also the risk of loss of reputation, theft of intellectual property and higher insurance premiums. The NIS 2 Directive and the forthcoming Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) impose stricter security requirements on critical infrastructure. Industrial PCs that comply with IEC 62443-4-2 standards are critical to meeting these regulations at the component level. InoNet introduces IEC 62443-4-2 certified Industrial PCs. This includes the first IEC 62443-4-2 certified edge AI computer made in Germany, which is already being used for AI applications in automated optical inspection (AOI).

Designed with Security by Design in mind, the industrial computers meet the stringent cybersecurity requirements of ISA/IEC 62443-4-2, enabling you to bring your end products and projects to market quickly and securely. The portfolio can be flexibly configured for your IoT and Edge AI projects.

Computer for HiL Testing in ADAS Development

InoNet launches HiL computer for simulations in vehicle development. Conventional ADAS development, based on extensive data acquisition in the vehicle, is both costly and time-consuming. As vehicle development becomes more complex, these methods are reaching their limits. Moving to a HiL strategy enables realistic simulation in a controlled environment. HiL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) is a testing method that integrates real hardware components into a simulated environment to test their behaviour under realistic conditions. This approach leads to significant time and cost savings while increasing the efficiency and accuracy of ADAS development. InoNet supports this change with customised HiL computers. The InoHiL platforms offer special advantages. They are individually configurable and scalable in terms of performance and communication interfaces (GPU, CAN-FD, LIN FlexRay) and can thus be adapted to the requirements of the respective application. The systems are compatible with real-time operating systems and existing software, allowing easy integration into existing test environments. This means that test data can be quickly uploaded, tagged and processed. In addition, an experienced engineering team is available to provide support throughout the development process. The InoHiL product line ranges from the configurable entry-level system InoHiL®-II to the more powerful computer InoHiL®-II-Q with QuickTray-v3 for encrypted data processing and the high-performance computer InoHiL®-B17QW. With server CPUs, liquid cooling and multi-GPU performance, the latter is ideal for intensive signal processing and complex modelling calculations. With seven PCIe x16 slots, it also offers a high degree of flexibility for different applications.

    NVIDIA Jetson Orin Edge-AI Computer

As the global AI market continues its rapid expansion across various industries, Eurotech is leading the way with the introduction of its latest Edge AI systems with NVIDIA Jetson Orin, the ReliaCOR 31-11 and ReliaCOR 33-11. The development focuses on the challenges associated with introducing AI and ensuring cybersecurity. The platforms offer an innovative and user-friendly solution that simplifies the secure deployment of AI at the edge.

Organisations across various sectors still struggle to transition to AI: AI projects from pilot to production phases, experiencing delays of over seven months and 47% failure rates, these numbers were recently reported also by HBR. The ReliaCOR 31-11 and 33-11 Edge AI systems make this transition seamless by enabling validation, deployment at scale, and lifecycle management of multiple AI models simultaneously. This capability is essential for enhancing operational efficiencies and accelerating time-to-market.

Cybersecurity is critical as national and international regulators impose increasingly stringent standards for critical infrastructure and companies need to protect themselves from increasing cyberattacks. The ReliaCOR devices are secure-by-design and, at release, certified according to ISA Secure / IEC 62443-4-1/-4-2.

The ReliaCOR 31-11 is powered by NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX with up to 16GB RAM. This means it can deliver up to 100 TOPS in a fanless and compact design. The availability of 4x GbE ports, with optional Power over Ethernet (PoE), simplifies cabling for multi-camera connections, making it ideal forintensive applications such as automatic product sorting and anomaly detection.

The ReliaCOR 33-11 elevates these capabilities with NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin, offering up to 64GB RAM and reaching 275 TOPS of AI compute in a fanless configuration. Certified with E-mark for automotive use, it supports multiple high-speed camera connections for up to 4x PoE cameras and up to 8x LAN cameras, eliminating the need and cost for a dedicated Ethernet switch.

Certified wireless and cellular connectivity is another standout feature of the ReliaCOR 31-11 and ReliaCOR 33-11. Both devices offer optional integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connections. This versatility ensures that the hardware can be deployed in a variety of settings, from remote locations requiring cellular connectivity, to factory floors where Wi-Fi/BT is prevalent. Thanks to intuitive remote device management and zero-touch provisioning (ZTP), AIoT implementations can be easily and securely controlled and connected to the cloud (edge-to-cloud framework), e.g. AWS IoT GreenGrass or AWS IoT Core.

Samples are available upon request – series production will follow later this year.
